03 · Reference
Key terms, in one line each.
A first look at the glossary. Each term will link to the guide where it is explained in full.
Allele
One of the alternative versions of a gene.
Catalyst
A substance that speeds up a reaction without being used up.
Enzyme
A biological catalyst, usually a protein.
Isotope
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons.
Mole
The amount of substance containing 6.022 140 76 × 10²³ particles.
Osmosis
Movement of water across a partially permeable membrane toward the side with more dissolved solute.
pH
A measure of acidity: the negative base-10 logarithm of the hydrogen-ion concentration.
Valence electrons
Electrons in an atom's outermost shell, the ones that take part in bonding.
Questions about the library
- A Guide explains a concept step by step, in plain words, building from first principles. A Reference is a look-up resource — tables, constants or definitions — like the physical constants from NIST CODATA 2018 or the standard genetic code from NCBI.
- Yes. All pages have stable URLs and are freely linkable. Content is licensed for educational use. If you include ScienceTheGuide alongside resources from OpenStax or Khan Academy we recommend citing the original primary sources listed on each page.
- "Both" means the page is equally relevant to biology and chemistry — for example the glossary of key terms or the physical constants table. Many concepts bridge the two fields; for foundational biochemistry, see Biochemistry (Berg et al.) on NCBI Bookshelf.
